Amber Adams Niven
I believe we all have stories worth sharing — stories that move us and have the power to move others. I’ve always been a writer, even before I claimed the word. I spent years trying to outrun my own body and life before I realized that honest writing requires coming home to it. That homecoming and integration is what I’m exploring in the memoir I’m working on.
Movement was the unexpected teacher in that homecoming process. Hiking taught me to push through hard things. Yoga taught me to listen to a body that I’d spent years trying to leave and that listening became inseparable from my writing practice. Dancing with Stewart/Owen and Lisa Mandle (and also in my kitchen with the kids) has deeply influenced how I move, bringing a sense of joy, wonder and curiosity. Movement and writing led back to each other.
Now I hold a master’s in creative writing from Wilkes University, where I’m completing my MFA. I hold a yoga certificate from Vira Bhava Yoga and still do ongoing training with my friends at Authentic Movements. I’ve studied herbalism, energy healing, and Ayurveda practices with Daisy Marquis and enjoy weaving that background into my classes when appropriate. I’m also the co-author of several Appalachian Trail guidebooks with my husband, published by Falcon Guides, a different kind of writing about finding your way through a place.
These days I live in Madison County with my husband and three kids, homesteading, homeschooling, and writing about all of it at my Substack, The Sunday Night Special. Twice a month I get to bring writing and movement together when I facilitate THE WELL. I truly love facilitating spaces that help others build trust within their bodies and creativity. It’s such a gift to witness others weaving the pieces together for themselves.
I hope you will join me at THE WELL, if you feel called! It all starts within.
THE WELL: YOGA FLOW + WRITE
A class for women who need the kind of reset a nap can't give. Come slow down with gentle yoga and let words spill onto the page through guided flow writing. This kind of writing slips past the self-critic and builds trust in your body and creativity, making it perfect for depleted creatives, mothers, caregivers, and anyone craving a creative practice that includes the body. No yoga experience or writing skills required, and pages can always stay private.
Thursdays 4:15 - 5:30pm, in person, starting September 3
