Brigid’s Fire by Joanna Powell Colbert
As the first stirrings of spring quicken in the womb of winter, we gather to honor Imbolc—one of the eight seasonal festivals of the Celtic Wheel of the Year that mark nature’s cycles of birth, growth, decay and rebirth.
Celebrated at the midpoint between the Winter Solstice (Yule) and the Spring Equinox (Ostara) and traditionally associated with the birth of the first lambs of the season, Imbolc marks the gradual return of the light, new life and inspiration, and the renewal of nourishment as milk begins to flow again, and warmth and sustenance return to the land.
Imbolc reminds us that transformation rarely arrives all at once; it begins quietly, through warmth, devotion and attentive care. This gathering is an invitation to tend the feminine flame within—to slow down, listen inward and attune to what is beginning to awaken beneath the surface of our lives.
We will invoke and honor Brigid—Celtic fertility goddess, keeper of the flame, guardian of the sacred wells, and patroness of creativity, healing and renewal. Through her presence, we remember the sacred work of tending the hearth: holding warmth, protecting possibility and nourishing what is yet to be born.
Our afternoon together will include ritual, seasonal reflection, devotional crafting and communal singing. We’ll tend the inner hearth and offer our attention to the small sparks—ideas, prayers, longings and visions—ready to be nurtured as the light returns.
